Letizia and Felipe of Spain: Two Decades After the Royal Wedding
The story was one that could have been taken from a rom-com: the most eligible bachelor, Prince Felipe -heir to the Spanish throne- had found love. The most interesting twist of the story was the lucky lady who had managed to conquer the unconquerable, a well-known journalist, who appeared daily on Spanish television. She was the woman who would become queen, hand in hand with Felipe. Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was as distant as possible from the traditional concept of a princess. A professional woman, expert in the nuances of the world, divorcée and with a successful career in journalism, she represented change. She embodied a new generation of princesses who didn’t come from the aristocracy, but had interesting personal lives they were leaving behind to start a new chapter.
It was Wednesday, May 22th of 2004, when the movie reached its climax, Felipe and Letizia’s wedding. The Almudena Cathedral was the perfect setting for this scene that was going to be watched by the whole world, when, with certain voices, the bride and groom promised eternal love at the altar. Calmed and with admirable conviction in their promise, Felipe and Letizia said their vows with firm and measured voices; the coquettish glances and the words of love came earlier, when they met for the first time on their big day. This fanfare was expected, since it was the first time in half a century that Madrid had a state wedding and the eyes of the world were set on Spain.
El vestido / The dress
The wedding dress was the other main character. A design by Manuel Pertegaz that made clear that Letizia had her own style. With a structured silhouette that was distinguished by its neckline -reminiscent of the lilies, the flower that represents the Borbon family-, long sleeves, with a medieval style; the dress was as memorable as its golden embroideries. The delicate veil was a gift from the groom and the fan came from the family trunk.
La tiara / The tiara
The chosen piece for this big day was the Prussian Tiara, a loan from Queen Sofia. It is a jewel made in 1913 by the German jeweler Koch for Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, who received it for her wedding and left it to her daughter, Queen Friederike, the mother of Queen Sofia. The decision was a loving nod to Letizia’s mother-in-law, since it is the same tiara that Queen Sofia had worn for her wedding to King Juan Carlos in 1962.
Las anécdotas / The anecdotes
With 1,200 guests, this was a wedding with all kinds of stories. While in more recent royal weddings we were able to have a peek of what happened during the religious ceremonies, without a glimpse of the parties, in this case, there were anecdotes that are still well-known. From the absence of Ernst of Hanover in the wedding ceremony, after having an amazing night during the reception dinner a day earlier, with Caroline of Monaco arriving at the Cathedral by herself; to the aristocrat who punched one of the guests, what happened that day is still remembered two decades later.
It has been 20 years since that day and Letizia and Felipe's wedding has given us a glimpse of what happens after the ‘Happily ever after’ in the movies. The most important change was, without a doubt, Felipe’s ascension to the throne, which completely changed the role of the heir couple and their two daughters. Leonor and Sofia are the joy and pride of their parents, showing the warmest, most human and approachable side of Letizia and Felipe. Of course, the ups and downs have been present, but it seems that they have learned how to navigate them. Just as they did with the unexpected storm on their wedding day, these last few years the Borbon family has faced a good number of scandals, but Felipe and Letizia have remained firm and unwavering.
As a couple, Felipe and Letizia have gone from the couple in love who managed to keep their relationship a secret before their engagement announcement to an established family that pays no mind to the gossip that surrounds them. They always look to fulfill their public role and remain firm in the promise they made in the Almudena Cathedral, even in the face of turbulence.
